Petition Body

Why has God, having the power that he/she has, not revealed his/her commandments and words to all beings but only to the prophets? If we are to believe that God wanted to guide people in the right direction would it not have been easier to tell everyone what to do rather than just telling one person? Why have messengers when you are omnipresent and have absolute power? Why give your commandments and words to a single person in Jerusalem or Saudi Arabia when it would have been impossible to communicate those words to people in Africa or Americas at that time? Were the people in other parts of the world not in need for guidance? If God made a believer out of Mohammad, Jesus or Moses through the revelations would he/she not have saved millions of lives over the ages if he/she had told those commandments and revelations to everyone and avoided all the religious killings, wars, and crusades?

How sure can we be that Bible, Koran, or other religious books are actually messages from God and not the making of a few politicians to help the people of their time? Considering many religious writings and books that are considered "word of God" by Christians, Muslims, Jews, and many other religions are hearsay and not the direct writings of the people that have apparently received the revelations, can we truly say that these words are the words of God and have not changed throughout times?

Thomas Paine in his pamphlet called "Age of Reason" states:

"Every national church or religion has established itself by pretending some special mission from God, communicated to certain individuals. The Jews have their Moses; the Christians their Jesus Christ, their apostles and saints; and the Turks their Mahomet, as if the way to God was not open to every man alike."

While carrying a detail argument about this question could take decades and one could even argue the very meaning of the word "god" but we would like to know your feeling about this question with the premise that "god" exists. The answer is that of yours and one that you have come to believe in over your lifetime up to this very moment. Some will question the teachings of their parents and reach different conclusions in life and some carry those beliefs throughout their lives.

In your case what do you believe in?

  • YES: My religion reflects the word of God and I believe in its legitimacy.
  • NO: Religions are NOT the word of God and I don't believe in the legitimacy of any of them
Petitioner's Note to the Voters
Quite honestly.. how sure can we be of what we are told? How much of what we believe is embedded in our fabric because of our childhood? Would we be holding cows sacred if we were born in India? Would we not have any religion if we were born in China? Aren't Chinese and Indians as adamont about their beliefs as we are as a Muslim, Christian, or a Jew?

Do we really need god to be good human beings?
